I find comfort in sirens.
That may be a tad inconsiderate of me seeing how uncommon it is that sirens be calling for celebration. But what can I say? Do we choose the sounds and smells that rock our hearts to a steady? If so, perhaps I’ll look to new sounds for relaxation.
Two nights ago, my mother and I saw Camelot at the Lincoln Center Theater directly behind the red aluminum table I’m sitting at. The jazz band to my diagonal right just took their break. Live music, especially surprise bands playing for free, are certainly comforting sounds.
I was one of the people who had fun in college; not one of those who spent their time prepping for afterlife. Yes, yes, yes, I could have “done it all” by having good grades, securing a post-grad fellowship, still being able to have a social life, all while having an exercised talent for hacky sack to cherry top it off- I highly recommend that path. When people always tell you you’re shitty, you start to believe them. Similarly, when people tell you grades don’t matter if you’re not applying to Grad School, you start to believe them.
Sometime during junior year, I started to pay less attention to solving statistics equations and gave more attention to measuring just how much beer and liquor I could mix without getting sicker.
Four years majoring in Creative Writing and Business Management left me with more of an ego than I knew what to do with, which is why I scrammed out of North Carolina and back home to Manhattan.
It’s been one month, three weeks and eight hours since graduation and while I am thrilled to focus on what I want I don’t know what that is exactly.
The fabulous thing is that while unpacking I came across old assignments, I thought I tossed, and I could see how much I learned. Writing and business had never come to my attention before and by the second day of orientation I was hypnotized by both. Furthermore, I had never been a “big picture” person before because past next week was typically blurry. The concepts and craft that stuck with me have carried me to this point.
Here are some of the general examples (in no particular order):
-It’s a rich man’s world
-Experiences come before anything
-Entrepreneurship is key
-Why are you telling this story?
-Fake it till you make it (sometimes)
-Have something to say about everything (especially if people get annoyed)
-Have journalistic skills (if you think it doesn’t apply to you, you are wrong)
-Mix business with pleasure
-Always have a plot to your blog posts
